Where Memories Meet Flavour
Daycare provider baking her heritage
Angie Ng Wie Cin is a daycare provider in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, and the founder of Aimi Sweets Co., a small-batch bakery and sweets business rooted in her Indonesian heritage and the memories she attaches to food. She still works with children every day; the business grew up alongside that work, not in place of it. Caring for kids taught her patience, responsibility, creativity, and the importance of putting love and care into everything she does. Food started as a hobby, a way of exploring new ideas, and it took root.
The same standards came with her into the kitchen. Food hygiene, freshness, and attention to detail are non-negotiable, because keeping things clean, tidy, and well organized is simply how she has always worked. She pays close attention to every step, from preparing the ingredients to cooking and presenting each treat, and nothing leaves her hands until it meets her own standards. She also stays true to the traditional Indonesian flavours that inspire her. The ingredients, the textures, the small details all matter, because they are what preserve the authentic taste and the memory behind each treat. "Even if customers may not see every step that happens behind the scenes, I know it matters."
What keeps her going is recognition of a quieter kind. Customers look forward to her next event and show up specifically to buy her treats. They tag Aimi in their posts, share their experiences online, recommend her to friends and family. Every repeat customer and familiar face at an event tells her that people remember, and that something meaningful is being built one treat, one customer, one connection at a time.
Beyond the brand, she is after a legacy: one that celebrates her heritage, connects people from different backgrounds, and encourages others to embrace their roots and follow what they love. Her hope is that Aimi Sweets Co. becomes a bridge between her Indonesian homeland and the community here in Halifax, introducing people to flavours, traditions, and memories that travelled a long way to get here.
A taste of home, shared
A name that means love
Aimi Sweets Co.'s Klepon is the bestseller that carries an entire heritage into a Dartmouth sweets kitchen, and the story starts with the name above the door. Angie Ng Wie Cin is a Chinese descendant born in Indonesia, and "Aimi" means "love" to her in Chinese. She chose it to honour her ancestors and to celebrate the homeland where she grew up, so that one word could hold her Chinese ancestry, her Indonesian roots, and her life as an immigrant building something new far from both.
The Klepon arrives looking like nothing else on a local dessert table. Its colour comes from pandan, a traditional Indonesian ingredient that lends a natural green hue and an aroma distinctive enough to announce itself before the first bite. For customers in Nova Scotia meeting it for the first time, that green and that texture raise questions. Angie welcomes the questions. Each one is an opening, a small introduction to the food culture she grew up inside.
What happens next is the part she loves. Hesitation gives way to compliments, often right there on the spot, once someone actually bites in. Coconut milk stands in for dairy milk in many of her creations, which can make certain treats a suitable option for people who are lactose intolerant, depending on the other ingredients used. The curiosity, the kind feedback, and most of all the repeat orders tell her the same thing again and again: unfamiliar flavours become new favourites when people are willing to try.
Behind every batch is a simple hope. That fellow Indonesian immigrants who miss the familiar tastes of home find a little sweetness of Indonesia here, and that the wider community finds a way into a culture it may not have tasted before.
