Our Rebellious Tale
From cubicles to craft beer legends
The Audacity of Hops 😎
Three minds trained in logic and precision,
Trading spreadsheets for a brewing mission.
University roommates with a shared obsession,
Engineering degrees, but a different profession.
Halifax needed something wild and free,
A place where misfits could simply be.
Dog-friendly patios and laughter so loud,
Standing out weird from the serious crowd.
Three engineers walk into a Dream.
They say Halifax has a heartbeat measured in foghorns and the tide, but for Joshua Council, Angus Campbell, and Doug Kehoe, that rhythm felt incomplete. It was missing a discordant, joyful thump. They were engineers, yes, their minds sharp edges and straight lines, but their souls? Their souls were a messy tangle of twisted copper wire and the raw scent of fermented barley.
In 2015, their corporate lives offered a terrifying comfort, a gilded cage built with stable careers, the hum of fluorescent lights, the cold feel of keyboards, and the stale air-conditioning. Yet, an irresistible, prickly urge to break free, a full-body shove into the unknown, began to stir within them.
Their dream wasn't a blueprint; it was a riot. They didn't just want to brew beer; they wanted to brew liquid rebellion. Their mission: to forge an "island of misfit toys"—a sanctuary where the bizarre wasn't just tolerated, it was celebrated. Imagine a place where the air vibrates with the sticky-sweet aroma of hops and the deep, resonant laughter of people who finally found their weirdo tribe. A place where the unconventional is the only rule, and the clinking of glasses is punctuated by the happy, unrestrained thump-thump-thump of a dog’s tail against a concrete floor.
With a bold, defiant gulp of courage—the kind that burns the throat and settles warm in the belly—they traded their drafting tables for mash tuns. Their story isn't about stability; it's about the reckless, exhilarating freedom found in the pursuit of something entirely, gloriously, quirky. It was the moment three engineers became three architects of a beautifully courageous new world.

Legendary Brews
Our most talked-about creations

Diablo Mexican Lager
Our best-selling masterpiece—a light, crisp, easy-drinking crushable Mexican lager with just a zing of lime zest and jalapeños that answers Walt Disney's question: "How can we 'plus' it?" We plussed a Mexican-style lager by adding the lime right in it, then went the extra inch to make it fun, talkable, and quintessentially quirky. A favorite gift for craft beer fans and a go-to order in our taprooms.
Gold winner at the 2019 Atlantic Canada Brewing Awards, our mexican lager is perfect paired with mexican food and is often described as nachos in a can.
This best seller will surely make your Taco Tuesday a whole lot more exciting.

Meet the Founders
Joshua Counsil, Angus Campbell & Doug Kehoe
Three engineers quit corporate jobs to build Halifax's most innovative craft brewery.
The three co-founders—Joshua, Angus Campbell & Doug Kehoe—were former engineers who studied and lived together in university. In 2015, they became 'recovering' engineers who quit their day jobs to take a chance on a dream, to create a place where camaraderie could foster.
What started as three friends longing for community, creativity, and connection has grown into a company of passionate misfits who pour their hearts into brewing, bartending, cooking, and creating unforgettable moments in our taprooms. Joshua describes Good Robot as "an island of misfit toys and beer"—a philosophy that continues to guide everything we do.
Since 2015, they've proven that when engineers apply their problem-solving skills to hospitality and craft beer, magic happens. They've built not just a brewery, but a cultural institution that makes Halifax a little weirder, a little more welcoming, and a lot more fun.
