All in one Tail-Wagging Retreat for Polished Playful Pets
Nurse turned groomer, patient listener
Before Bradley Eaglestone was the founder of The Barkshire Club, Nova Scotia's canine grooming, daycare, boarding and training destination, he was a nurse. Healthcare taught him compassion, patience, empathy, attention to detail, and perhaps most importantly, the ability to recognize what someone needs even when they cannot communicate it themselves. Those lessons translated beautifully into his work with animals. Professionally showing and breeding dogs deepened his understanding of canine behaviour, structure, temperament, and the extraordinary relationship between dogs and their people. He puts it plainly: he traded his nursing scrubs for a grooming apron and a leash, but the heart behind his work has never changed.
He established The Big Fur Grooming Shop, where he learned firsthand what it truly means to be a small business owner. Long hours, difficult decisions, financial uncertainty, and the enormous responsibility of having people place their trust in you. When he and his two business partners created The Barkshire Club, he didn't leave any of that behind. He brought every lesson, success, mistake, and challenge along with him.
His one non-negotiable is simple: he will never sacrifice an animal's emotional well-being for convenience, speed, or profit. The most important part of the work often happens long before a leash is clipped on or a grooming table is raised. It starts with listening, not necessarily with the ears, but through observation, patience, body language, and understanding the energy an animal brings into a space. He is conscious of what he carries into every interaction, because posture, tone of voice, and emotional state directly influence how safe a dog feels. Sometimes that means slowing down when the schedule says otherwise. Sometimes it means changing the approach entirely. Sometimes the greatest accomplishment is recognizing that an animal simply needs more time. Those are decisions a customer may never witness, and they are among the most important ones made here. Trust is earned, never forced, and every dog deserves the dignity of being treated as an individual.
The joy is in the small things. The look on a family's face when their once-anxious dog walks confidently through the doors. A heartfelt message from a client about how much happier their dog has become. Someone taking a moment out of a busy day just to say, "Thank you for what you do." Over time many clients become more than customers; they become part of what he affectionately calls his tribe, the people who believe in him, encourage him, challenge him, and remind him that even on the hardest days, the work matters.
Then there is his partner, who has stood beside him through the excitement, uncertainty, financial struggles, long hours, and personal challenges of chasing a dream, and their own fur-family at home, who have filled their lives with unconditional love, laughter, chaos, and more than a little dog hair. On the days he is completely exhausted, he tries to remember that success isn't always a full appointment book or a busy daycare. Sometimes it's a wagging tail, a genuine hug, or simply coming home to the people and animals he loves.
He believes every animal deserves to be understood and every family deserves to feel supported, and that genuine compassion has the power to change lives. With his partners, he is building a place where knowledge is shared, relationships are nurtured, and kindness is never compromised for convenience or profit. A place the community feels genuinely proud to call its own, where people feel welcome, dogs feel safe, and future generations of animal lovers learn empathy, respect, and responsible care. He doesn't want to be remembered simply for building a successful business. He wants to be remembered for how people were made to feel, how the animals entrusted to him were treated, and the difference made along the way, one dog, one family, and one meaningful connection.
From show rings to Falmouth doors
Watching a dog become themselves
The Barkshire Club's best-selling offer isn't a grooming package or a boarding night; it's The Experience, and in a canine care business it started, improbably, with cats. On a warm fall afternoon in 2025, three friends sat down to dinner, shared stories and laughed, and the conversation drifted toward dreams and possibilities. The original business idea actually involved cats. Somewhere between good food and imagination, the talk swung back into what Bradley Eaglestone affectionately calls "my sandbox" the wonderful world of dogs. With his years of professionally showing, breeding, grooming, and working with dogs, the pieces fell into place fast. None of the three sat down that day intending to start a business together. Ten months later, they opened the doors.
Those doors sit in Falmouth, in Nova Scotia's Annapolis Valley, and they open onto grooming, doggy daycare, boarding, canine coaching, puppy socialization, and obedience classes, all under one roof. A puppy can learn to greet another dog in the play area and come back years later for a bath and a boarding stay, with the same staff reading the same personality.
What families actually return for is harder to package. A nervous dog walks through the doors uncertain, and weeks later comes back with a wagging tail and genuine excitement to see the staff. A dog who once struggled with fear or social interactions begins to trust, to play, to discover a different side of themselves. Sometimes the bigger transformation happens in the person holding the leash: the tears, the relief, the owner realizing their dog is capable of things they thought impossible. Trust is built session by session here, and the small victories get noticed day to day. That's The Experience, and it's why people come back.
A Heartfelt Note
First and foremost, thank you. Truly, from the bottom of my heart.
Whether you’ve just discovered The Barkshire Club, followed our journey from The Big Fur Grooming Shop, recommended us to a friend, or trusted us with a beloved member of your fur-family, please know how much your support means to us.
When you support a small business like ours, you’re doing something far greater than purchasing a service. You’re believing in three friends who took an enormous leap of faith, invested in a shared dream, and decided to build something meaningful for their community.
You’re helping us create jobs, support local families, share knowledge, and provide a place where animals are treated with the compassion, patience, and understanding they deserve.
I want you to know that your dog will never be just another appointment, another kennel, or another number to me. Behind every wagging tail is a family who loves that animal deeply, and I never take the responsibility of earning that family’s trust lightly.
There will be growing pains, lessons learned, and moments when we don’t get everything perfect. We’re human, and we’re building this dream in real time. But what I can promise is that our intentions will always come from a place of genuine care.
To everyone who has cheered us on, shared a post, offered encouragement, or simply walked through our doors, you’ve become part of our story.
Small businesses aren’t built by their owners alone. They’re built by the communities that choose to believe in them.
From my business partners, my partner, our fur-family, and my entire tribe, thank you for giving our dream a place in your lives.
We hope that when you walk through our doors, you feel something special. Because to us, you already are.
