Our Rooted Tale

A piping tip, a slow shift, and a cupboard that changed everything

Before Whiskey Treats was anything, Tyler Marsman was clocking shifts as a gate clerk at PSA Halifax container pier, watching the world slow to a crawl during covid. The port kept moving, but barely. Shifts got quiet. Time opened up in ways it hadn't before, and he filled it the way a lot of people fill unexpected stillness by picking something up with his hands and seeing what happened.

He started baking at home. A friend tried his treats, told him they were good, told him he should post them. So he made an Instagram account. That was the full extent of the plan. There was no business idea behind it. Just a slow shift, a good friend, and something to do.

Treats worth sneaking a second of

Dream Bar

The dream bar is a layered bake that brings together fruit, chocolate, and cream cheese in a single square. It is not trying to be one thing. It holds a few different flavours and textures at once, and somehow they all belong together.
Customers keep coming back to it. It sells well at markets and earns the kind of comments Tyler holds onto on the slow days

Moonmist Cupcake

The moonmist cupcake is built around a fruity flavour that Tyler says hits people in a particular way. Moonmist as a flavour profile carries a lot of weight for a certain generation, it is the kind of thing that takes you somewhere before you have time to think about it.
Tyler believes it sells as well as it does because of nostalgia. Most people who reach for it are not just buying a cupcake. They are reaching back toward something.

Meet the Maker

Steady hands, quiet builder

Tyler Marsman

Tyler Marsman is the kind of person who figures things out by doing them, not by planning them first. It's the reason Whiskey Treats exists. He didn't set out to run a business. He set out to fill some quiet hours, and the business came later, uninvited, and he decided to let it stay.

He is still, by his own admission, working out the parts that don't come naturally. Social media sits at the top of that list. The baking he understands intuitively. The posting, the planning, the showing up online with something to say, that's where he has to push himself. He does it anyway, because he has seen what a single comment or share can do on a day when nothing else is working.

What drives him on the hard days is not ambition in any conventional sense. It's the feedback from people who come by his table and say something real. The person who tells him the treats look beautiful. The one who comes back because they tried something last month and haven't stopped thinking about it. That's the thing Tyler is actually building toward — not scale, not a bigger operation, but a table full of treats and people who are genuinely glad they stopped.

I want you to know that I never planned for any of this. I was just baking at home during a very strange couple of years, trying to fill the time, and someone told me I should share it. That one comment started something I had no roadmap for, and I have been figuring it out as I go ever since.

I hope everyone who tries something from Whiskey Treats feels like a kid who got away with sneaking an extra treat. And to everyone who comes by a market, places an order, likes a post, drops a comment, or shares something — just a big thank you. Any and everything does help, more than I can probably say properly. Seeing the support from the local community is a wonderful feeling, and I don't take a single bit of it for granted.
